Chapter 6

This was the third time I’d ever been called out on a terrorist threat. These calls could be anything or nothing. Ranging from false alarms to very serious situations involving multiple agencies over several days. I was hoping that today would be a false alarm, but by the way, everyone was running around I got the feeling this was going to be a big one. My gear was ready. I went into our briefing room. On my way in, the chief handed me a file folder.

My team was supposed to provide search-and-rescue as we now had confirmation that the smaller company had some of their employees that had gone rogue and set off a bomb. We were unsure as to the magnitude of it and the destruction that it had caused. I relayed this information to my team and we packed up to go. On the ride over I was trying to imagine what I was about to face. By this point, I knew it was real and that we would be facing something horrible, it was just a matter of how horrible.

As we pulled up to the scene, I learned how horrible. The rogue employees were calling themselves Justice for America Group – JAG for short. They had been holding secret meetings for a while now, knowing the threat from the bigger company was coming. All kinds of plans concerning what to do had been discussed. Everything from peaceful protests, marching, and holding signs to something more serious like this.

JAG had decided to go with one of the more serious options. As we pulled up, I could see the command post was set up in the other parking lot. The Incident Response Commander was over there, running the show and barking orders. They were trying to first assess the extent of the damage. Two bombs had gone off destroying, one building and severely damaging another in the big company’s complex. They’d used homemade fertilizer and other common farm items.

They hadn’t used anything specific or easy to trace. It would be hard to catch them going on the materials that they used. They would have to find them using other methods. Not much of either of the bombs were left, so that wouldn’t be an avenue of figuring things out. Still trying to find the point of origin for both bombs, the police had lots to do. So far, no luck. They were still calculating the blast radius and working back from there.

The company was taking roll call and trying to figure out who was missing, who was safely out of the building, and who hadn’t come to work that day. The list of missing people was growing fast. That would mean more people for us to search for. I looked at the rubble and saw that they were already putting up bracing to secure the remains of the first building so we could safely go in and search for those who were still alive. They had cleared the first section of the building so that would be where we started looking.
